I had an inspiring chat with Martin about how he has taken opportunities to create some great new spaces (Yes! New. Green. Spaces.) recently and now has a dedicated website just for the Parks Development Projects.
Question: how did you manage to be creating new open spaces at this time of cuts?
There was a piece of unused land at North Road owned by the local college which they nolonger used. It took quite a long time, but a local Councillor succeeded in persuading them to lease it to us for an open space to save them having to maintain it. We took it over a year ago and are now upgrading it and have just started to allow people to use it.
Question: But that’s now all is it?
No we are now doing another smaller site which was left when a school relocated. The building is to become a housing site but the old playing field will be public land at Tuckers Field.
Question: How has all this been funded?
We still have a capital improvements budget and there was some Section 106 money. And we work with our in-house contractor too.
Question: And how did the website come about?
The main Council website was a bit unwieldy for the kind of use we wanted to make of the internet for our service with daily updates and feeds. The Poole Projects website is run by a member of the public who used to work for us. It has information on all our projects, how to get involved, how to get our e-newsletter and our facebook page too
