Question: What is the Walking for Health Scheme?
The Ramblers manages the national Walking for Health programme which is active across the south west. Many walks are delivered entirely within, or go through, our parks and green spaces.
We work in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support: we provide the support and infrastructure for local Walking for Health schemes and Macmillan finds and supports volunteers to deliver the programme of short walks.
Question: How is the scheme going to develop?
In the future we will be encouraging Walking for Health schemes to become more targeted in their delivery – ensuring that more people who have the most to benefit from being active are taking part. Parks and green spaces close to where people live will play an important role in providing an environment that is pleasant to walk in.
Question: How can Parks and Green Space Managers get involved?
In the first instance they can support the programme by considering the views and needs of the local scheme organisers and volunteers, but there are lots of ways to assist,:
• welcoming the scheme
• providing volunteer walk leaders
• setting up a new walk
• providing facilities that are good for walkers such as step free paths and smooth surfaces, toilets, a café, water fountains, places to rest
